“I am so pleased to hear that the Mermaid Society SMTX will help to educate the community about the special nature of the ecosystem of our river here, and the river’s endangered species. We can always use the help in spreading the word, and I believe the Mermaid Society will find ways to involve people who have not yet been involved in the effort to take care of this river. We welcome all the help they can give!”
In 2025, the Mermaid Society is excited to introduce two amazing events aimed at fostering community engagement and environmental stewardship. First up, during the festival in May, we’ll be hosting the Eco-Stewardship Community Fair—a fun, family-friendly event focused on teaching kids and families how to protect and care for the environment. It's the perfect way for all ages to get involved and learn about eco-friendly practices in a hands-on, interactive setting.
Later in the year, we’ll continue our commitment to river conservation with the River Guardianship Symposium. This event is designed for anyone passionate about the health of our rivers—bringing together river stewards, environmental experts, and community stakeholders. The symposium will dive into important discussions about protecting our waterways and building a sustainable future for the San Marcos River and beyond.
Both events highlight the Mermaid Society's dedication to community involvement, environmental care, and the celebration of our beautiful natural surroundings.
Vision:
The symposium is designed not only for environmental organizations but also for the general public. By building a strong and creative alliance, the Mermaid Society believes that the community can develop a powerful movement that encourages active participation in river stewardship. The ultimate goal is to reduce the need for frequent river clean-ups by fostering a culture of proactive conservation and responsibility among both residents and visitors.
Impact:
Through this annual event, the Mermaid Society aims to inspire and motivate the community to take collective action, ensuring the San Marcos River remains a pristine and thriving ecosystem for future generations. By working together, we can create a sustainable model of river stewardship that extends beyond our local community and sets an example for others to follow.
