Internships
Internships are a great example of Mermaid Society SMTX’s philosophy. The creation of a year-round internship program with Texas State University students who want to be part of the on-going development work for Mermaid Week SMTX is mutually beneficial. Students will have opportunity to apply their knowledge in various capacities throughout the year to gain hands on experience, develop skills, make connections, strengthen their resumes, learn about a field, and assess their interest and abilities.
Developing opportunities through the Mermaid Society SMTX initiative encourages synergy between students and local community, which is vital to creating an environmentally conscience culture. Students participating in this internship program can be a member of the Mermaid Society SMTX’ Advisory Committee. Members of this committee are a diverse group of stakeholders citywide representing both public and private associations.
Students will be part of the conversations that address the stewardship of our river and enhance the arts and cultural profile of our city. Interns must be dedicated, and bring a high level of creativity, energy and vision to play a leadership role. We would anticipate opportunities for students from a variety of fields of study. Mermaid Society is an approved site for the 'work-study program' at Texas State University. Our long range planning includes paid internship opportunities, but for now students will receive "hands-on" experience from event planning to child education.
