An innovative community outreach initiative, Maya, Mermaid Society’s mascot, will travel to schools in the area to introduce children ages K-5th grade to encourage ways to become river guardianship. An enthusiast in the field, Maya will convey her message through storytelling and other activities, as well as introducing her “friends” like Sally the Salamander and other endangered and rare species that exist in the San Marcos River. Schools, youth organizations, and summer programs can get a visit from Maya, and by use of this program, promote the image of the mermaid to the public, as well as inspiring the younger generation to safeguard the valuable and easily damaged San Marcos River area. By fostering the spirit of conservation in young children, we hope to see a generation raised to respect the irreplaceable value of the area they reside in.
Printed materials such as coloring pages will be distributed to area restaurants to be used as coloring placemats for children. Children books and other educational material is currently in development. Additionally, Maya will begin making public appearances starting as early as June of this year.
